  • SSI Instructor Evaluation ($695)
  • SSI professional payment ($110)
  • Commercial dive medical (roughly $150). This is required once every 12 months to stay current as a dive professional


This course structure will be organised when you have your personal orientation with a staff member.

This course will take roughly 100 hours. These hours may drop down to 50 if the candidate enters the program as a certified SSI Dive Control Specialist


  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Own a Total Diving System of professional type and quality
  • Have a current medical exam for scuba diving not older than 1 year and signed by a licensed medical practitioner
  • Logged a total of at least 75 open water dives


  • Logged a total of at least 100 open water dives totalling 65 hours or more.
  • Provide and maintain proof of current training in first aid and CPR.
  • Provide and maintain certification in the emergency administration of oxygen.
  • Pass a fitness and watermanship evaluation if one has not been passed in the last 12 months.
  • Pass all Mini Exams with a minimum score of 90% averaged across all 4 exams.
  • Deliver at least 4 academic lessons on different subjects of various time spans with at least one 30-minute lesson being a pass at ITC level. At least 4 lesson evaluation forms must be on file, including the passing lesson
  • Pass and have on file, the facilitation of an academic session or workshop from:
    • the Open Water Diver course;
    • Stress & Rescue Specialty; and
    • Resort diver Program – Pool & Open Water.
    • Pass at least three pool presentations in the following areas:
      • General open water skill (OWD course);
      • Emergency skill; and
      • Rescue skill.
    • Pass at least three open water presentations in the following areas:
      • General open water skill (OWD course);
      • Emergency skill; and
      • Rescue skill.
  • Pass a Professionalism Evaluation
  • To remain current, the student must complete the Diving Accident Management course prior to renewing if not already qualified.
  • Maintain Professional Liability Insurance (where applicable).


After passing the Instructor Training Instructor Candidates may do the following:

  • Perform in the same role as a Dive Control Specialist;
    • Conduct all academic sessions for the Open Water Diver program without supervision;
    • to conduct exercises involving any self-aid or emergency skills that are done underwater using scuba equipment in the pool without supervision; and
    • Enrol in an SSI Instructor Evaluation.


Instructor Candidates may not:

  • Conduct underwater skill evaluation during the open water scuba training dives unless under the direct supervision of an active SSI Open Water Instructor.
  • Issue Open Water Diver certification.


  • 700m snorkel not using arms while neutrally buoyant in less than 15 minutes
  • 100m tow (both divers full set gear) in less than 7 minutes
  • 15 minute survival float in only swim wear
  • 25m underwater swim with fins and mask.
